Shine By Nine Program

Training sessions for the School District of Washington's Shine By Nine program for 2019-20 will be announced soon.

Volunteers are needed for the program, which is aimed to improve literacy in grades kindergarten through third.

"We will take volunteers in all elementary K-3 classrooms and eventually would like to see great interest and potential expansion into additional subject areas," said Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer.

The program started to take shape when the Superintendent's Community Advisory Team was brainstorming on ways to assist teachers with reading.

At the same time, VanLeer said the district was looking at ways to expand its volunteer program and utilize more volunteers to help with different achievement goals.

Teachers have reported that they could use volunteers to help students with decoding activities, assisting with reading center setup/activity setup and assisting with small groups.

"We're asking our elementary teachers to recruit parents who might be interested in attending one of the upcoming training sessions," VanLeer said.

All training sessions will be held at the Technology and Learning Center on Highway 47 and will last approximately 90 minutes.
