School District of Washington RATIONALE FOR THE STUDY OF MUSIC
Music is a discipline, which enhances imagination and artistic ability. It is a symbol of man's ability to express himself through nonverbal communication. Experiences in the arts are crucial in society , freeing the mind for higher levels of thought. The arts encourage experimentation, nurture creativity develop powere of discrimination and evaluation, and an aesthetic sensitivity to life's experiences. Each child should be given the opportunity to develop his or her talent to the fullest. Music can be a learnable skill involving all three of the learning domains: cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. Because of this, music provides opportunities for success for many students who may have difficulties in other areas in the curriculum. It has been our experience at Washington School District that many of our students have successfully pursued music as a career in both performance and future music educators. The overall goal of our music program is to provide many levels of skills and studies to involve all students a Washington School District no matter what level of talent or skills they may have. We provide a divers curriculum in both instrumental and and vocal experiences. Our overall goal is help students build a relationship with music that provides enjoyment, personal growth, a sense of historical and cultural purpose, and an enhancement of the quality of life.

School District of Washington Music Curriculum COURSE DESCRIPTION: Music Theory
This course provides students with the skills to compose and analyze music. They polish their skills in note reading, scale construction, interval study, chord building, melody writing, ear training, creative composition writing, and sight reading. The students will be expected to complete four major writing projects during the course of the year.
A+ Competencies for Music Theory The learner will be able to: · write music notation and familiarize with the piano keyboard · write scales and measure distances of pitches and their relationship to each other · interpret rhythmic patterns and write combinations of rhythms related to the meter signature · write and perform all major, minor, and perfect intervals · accurately write meters relevant to the writing assignment and choice of text · write all major and minor key signatures · establish tonality in all written examples of composition · write and incorporate appropriate meter and accurate beats per measure when composing original music · analyze harmonic structure in both vocal and instrumental works · write figured bass and analyze examples · compose a final transcript with full harmonic analysis · analyze composition indicating techniques in melodic development · perform all intervals ascending and descending accurately · perform using solfeggio syllables and the number system to sightread
