RATIONALE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION


The Special Education Department facilitates the academic and social progress of students who are mentally and/or behaviorally challenged and provides for their transition to post secondary settings.
Students will benefit from Special Education course offering by acquiring basic skills, developing learning strategies, and by preparing for possible vocational training and higher education.
Course offerings are determined by students' past and present levels of performance as delineated on their Individual Education Plans.

Course Description: Basic Government and Geography

This class is geared to those who need development of basic social studies skills. Areas of study include citizenship, government (national, state, and local), map usage, geography, basic social studies concepts, and basic economics.

A+ Competencies for Basic Government-Special Education
With 80% accuracy students will be able to:

· learn how Columbus found the New World
· learn about English colonization
· learn about differences and similarities between New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies
· learn about the Declaration of Independence
· learn about the Constitution
· learn about the Federal government and how it works
· learn about the Missouri State government and how it works
· learn about Westward Expansion
· learn about the Civil War
· learn how to use maps and their features

Assessments will be written tests.
