Family Reading NightLet’s get together and READ! The Community Literacy Foundation, in partnership with the School District of Washington, Neighborhood Reads, Washington Public Library and Friends of the Library, and the Washington Optimist Club, will host Family Reading Night on Friday, March 1, at Washington Middle School.

Additionally, the School District of Washington’s Parent Summit Series event for March is a partnership with Family Reading Night.

The free family event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and will feature Marc Colagiovanni, author of “The Reflection in Me,” along with the book’s illustrator, Peter H. Reynolds.

Colagiovanni is a children's book author who is currently a practicing attorney in the state of Rhode Island. While he is honored to be a part of the legal profession and enjoys the practice of law, his true passion is writing. He is the author of “When Things Aren't Going Right, Go Left” and “The Reflection in Me,” both illustrated by Reynolds.

Family Reading Night will feature stories in reading rooms, activity tables hosted by area school PTO organizations, refreshments and book giveaways. The Washington Police Department will share a skit at the end of the evening based on a book.

Organizations and individuals interested in donating book baskets to give away at Family Reading Night may contact Penny Heisel at [email protected].

Children of all ages are invited to participate in a Self-Portrait Gallery art project and have their work displayed at Family Reading Night. Children will draw their own self-portrait in a provided mirror template. The self-portraits celebrate the book theme of “The Reflection in Me.” Self-portraits can be submitted as a class project or individually. The template and more information can be found at NeighborhoodReads.com and should be submitted by Monday, Feb. 26.

Families who read together the week before Family Reading Night will have the opportunity to bring their reading logs to enter into a drawing for gift certificates provided through a donation from the Washington High School Football Team. Reading logs will be distributed in schools in mid-February and can be downloaded at NeighborhoodReads.com.

Family Reading Night is a free family event for all ages. Additional support for this event is provided by Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of New Haven and Ziglin Signs.
