Scholar Bowl UpdateWashington High School sent scholar bowl teams to two events on Saturday, March 9. The GAC meet took place at Orchard Farm. The Junior varsity State Meet was held at Helias.

Washington has won GAC for the past 3 years, and are the defending champs at JV State, having been in the final in each of the last 4 years, winning 3.

At Orchard Farm, the nine teams played a simple round robin, with no final attached. Washington went 7-0 before the last game against fellow undefeated Ft. Zumwalt North, which they lost 400-140, placing second in the conference.

Team members were Elise Thierbach, Audrey Bush and James Collier. Bush and Collier, as the seventh and fifth-place scorers, respectively, were named to the second team all-conference.

At JV State, the 18 teams were placed into three groups of six, and played a round robin. The top two from each bracket advanced to the playoffs.

Washington A went 4-1 in the morning, dropping a game to eventual third-place Kirksville, but still made the playoffs as the second seed from their bracket.

Washington B went 3-2, missing the playoffs, losing to Hickman A and Hallsville B. The B team defeated Jefferson City and Rolla in the consolation bracket, finishing at 4-5 on the day and in 10th place.

Team members were Katlynn Miller (fifth place scoring medal), Owen Spreckelmeyer and Elijah Uffman.

Washington A went into the playoffs with the one carried-over loss to Kirksville.

In the playoffs, they defeated Calvary Lutheran 355-210, Hallsville B 410-145, Hallsville A 430-340, and Hickman A, 305-220.

After a couple of Kirksville losses, Washington was standing at the top of the bracket at 4-1, and Kirksville and Hallsville A had to play each other for the right to take on WHS in the final. It marked the fifth straight year that Washington has had at least one team in the final at JV State.

Hallsville surged ahead on the last three tossups to take out Kirksville.

In the final, Hallsville would have to win twice, and Washington would only have to win once.

Washington opened a large lead early and didn’t look back, winning the first game of the final 415-235, and taking their second straight JV State title, and fourth of the past five years.

Team members were Max Grimes, Samantha Doepker (second place scoring medal), Silas Clements and Kyle Meyer.
