Washington High School opened its varsity baseball season by competing in the annual Four Rivers Classic.
The Blue Jays, coached by Dane Gough, reached the tournament championship game and settled for second-place honors.
Washington (3-1) posted pool play victories over Hermann 9-8 and Sullivan 7-1 to advance to the championship bracket.
In the championship bracket at Ronsick Field on Saturday, March 27, the Blue Jays cruised past De Soto in the semifinals 11-4, and lost to Rolla in the championship game, 10-3.
On the mound, Gavin Mehrhoff started two games for the Blue Jays. Gavin Matchell started against Sullivan and earned the win. Morgan Copeland started the championship game. Jack Lackman picked up two wins in relief. Also seeing time on the hill were Jake Baldwin, Hanon Jarvis, Will Lingle, Jacob Lombardo, Louis Paule, Seth Roewe and Cooper Thiemann.
At the plate, Jarrett Hamlett collected nine hits in 16 at-bats. Luke Kleekamp also is off to a red-hot start with seven hits in 12 at-bats. Also adding to the offense were Sam Paule, Luke Kroeter and Matchell with five hits apiece. Kroeter also drew six walks and had an on-base percentage of .688. Paule stole four bases. Louis Paule, Calvin Straatmann, Zac Coulter, Lingle, Thiemann and Lackman also had hits during the tournament.
