The Class 6 championships featured four teams; Washington, Ft. Zumwalt North, Raymore-Peculiar and St. Joseph Central.

Washington reached the state finals by winning the Class 6 District 2 meet in April and then defeating Oakville in the sectional round.

Normally, the four teams left at state would play a round robin and then be seeded into the championship or third-place game, accordingly. This year, to minimize contact time, the four sectional winners were seeded regionally directly into the semifinals. Washington played Ft. Zumwalt North and Raymore-Peculiar played St. Joseph Central.

Washington cruised to a semifinal victory over Ft. Zumwalt North, 410-170, to advance to the state championship match. In the other semifinal, Raymore-Peculiar edged St. Joseph Central in overtime, 371-370.

In the championship contest, Washington lost to Raymore-Peculiar, 440-210. Washington placed second out of 44 Class 6 teams in Missouri.

“We had hoped that it would be possible to catch Raymore-Peculiar on the back foot after they'd just had a big climactic win, but it was not to be,” said Washington High School Scholar Bowl Coach David Dennis. “Ray-Pec has a player who's widely considered one of the best in the country, and he took over quickly, leading them to the win.”

Washington’s starters were senior captain Katlynn Miller, juniors Samantha Doepker and Kyle Meyer, and freshman Vincent Hoang.

Other players on the Washington roster who got to play during the Ft. Zumwalt North game were sophomores Grace Nuckolls and Cameron Schenkel and freshmen Hayden Ley and Aidan Van Leer.
