Washington High School Softball Team (KLPW), Christine Gerling (Missourian) Named Athletes of the Week
The Washington High School softball team and sophomore shortstop Christine Gerling have been named the KLPW Radio and Washington Missourian Athletes of the Week, respectively.
The entire softball team was named the KLPW Athletes of the Week. Team members are Christine Gerling, Kelsie Holtmeyer, Lexi Lewis, Elizabeth Reed, Grace Molitor, Ella Lause, Lauren Opfer, Myla Inman, Lacy Monzyk, Kendall Nix, Taylor Brown, Emily Bruckerhoff, Loren Thurmon and Maddie Guevara. The team is coached by Philip King, Dane Gough, Grant Young and Tim Zumsteg.
Playing in the MSHSAA Class 4 Softball Championships in Springfield, Washington continued its dominance through the postseason with a pair of mercy rule victories, an 11-0 victory in five innings over Rolla in the championship game and a 10-0 win over Platte County in six innings in the semifinals.
The Lady Jays (32-5) ended their season on a school record 19-game winning streak.
It’s Washington High School’s second team state championship, joining the 1973 Blue Jays football team.

Christine Gerling was named the Washington Missourian Athlete of the Week.
Gerling was 6-6 at the plate with a walk, double, three runs and one RBI in the Lady Jays’ two games at the state tournament. Gerling and teammate Taylor Brown both set the school record for most hits in a single season with 55.
She also finished the season ranking in the program’s top 10 for single season batting average (fifth at .462), runs (fourth with 34), and doubles (tied for ninth with 7).
Gerling also played solid defense at shortstop and did some pitching during the state championship season.
