Lauren Opfer, Landon Boston and Taylor Brown Named Athletes of the Week

WHS Blue JaysThree Washington High School athletes have been named athletes of the week.

Softball player Lauren Opfer and football player Landon Boston are Washington Missourian Athletes of the Week. Softball player Taylor Brown is the KLPW Radio Athlete of the week.

Lauren Opfer

Opfer, a junior pitcher and first baseman, has had a big season in the pitching circle for the Lady Jays.

Opfer has a record of 7-0 with a 0.40 earned-run average.

In 34.2 innings of work, she’s allowed seven runs, two earned, on 24 hits with 15 walks and 35 strikeouts.

Opfer has helped the Lady Jays to a 22-2 record, which has included tournament titles at Seckman and the Suburban Shootout.

“She has put her name on the map as one of the top pitchers in the state,” said Washington Softball Coach Grant Young.

Landon Boston

Boston, a junior running back and linebacker, carried the ball 35 times for 261 yards and one touchdowns in the Blue Jays’ 35-32 loss at Ft. Zumwalt North on Friday, September 16. For the season, Boston has rushed for 665 yards and six touchdowns in four games.

Defensively, Boston registered two tackles, two fumble recoveries and one tackle for loss in the Ft. Zumwalt North game.

Taylor Brown

Brown, a junior pitcher and first baseman, entered action on Tuesday, September 20, with a pitching record of 10-1 with a 1.18 earned-run average.

In 71 innings of work, she’s allowed 21 runs, 12 earned, on 23 hits with 39 walks and 135 strikeouts. She had 21 strikeouts in a seven-inning victory over Rockwood Summit on September 13.

Offensively, Brown has a batting average of .479 with four home runs, 38 RBIs, 15 runs scored, and 10 doubles. She has a .519 on-base percentage and a .781 slugging percentage. Against Holt on Monday, September 19, she had two home runs and seven RBIs.

The Lady Jays entered action on Wednesday, September 22, with an overall record of 22-2 coming off tournament titles at Seckman and the Suburban Shootout.
