English Learner

English Learner (EL) Program

The School District of Washington, in conjunction with the State of Missouri, recognizes the unique needs of the English language learner. The School District of Washington strives to ensure that all students have the opportunity and support they need to reach his or her full potential.

The English Language (EL) Program in the School District of Washington is designed to advance English learners' knowledge and use of the English language. The support provided is designed to help ELs succeed in school, college and/or careers. At the School District of Washington, all educators share the responsibility for ELs success, engage effectively with thief families, and value and nurture their linguistic and cultural assets.

English learners are taught by effective, well-prepared, and culturally responsive educators who hold them to high standards. Additionally, specially certified EL teachers provide additional support to ELs. English learners have equitable access to meaningful and rigorous learning opportunities that build on their cultural and linguistic assets and the academic, linguistic, social, and emotional supports they need to excel.

The School District of Washington has developed a LAU Plan to provide goals, guidance, and procedures for identification, programming and collaboration purposes.
