SDOW Staff Opening Ceremony; Teacher of the Year Finalists Announced

Staff Opening CeremonyThe School District of Washington held its opening ceremony for all staff members Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the C.J. Burger Theater at Washington High School.

Students returned to the classroom for the start of the 2019-20 school year on Thursday, Aug. 15

Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer gave her annual back to school message to the staff. The message to staff was if you are asking students to rise by lifting others, be sure to fill your own cups. The District’s focus area and strategic plan centers around inspiring achievement, character and personal growth in all.

Board of Education President John Freitag also addressed the staff.

Performing were the Washington High School Jaywalkers Dance team, Cheerleaders, and the Drumline.

Also speaking were Dawn Kitchell on behalf of WINGS Educational Foundation and South Point Elementary Principal Aimee Harty on behalf of the United Way.

The WINGS Educational Foundation awarded its third STEAM Collaborative WINGS Grant.

The grant for $10,000 was awarded to Washington High School math teacher Kyle Ellrich for his project entitled, “Coding With Robots.”

The five finalists for the SDOW and Wings Teacher of the Year Award for Educational Excellence were announced. The winner will be named at the WINGS Hall of Honor on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, and will be the district’s nominee for the South Central Region Teacher of the Year.

The Teacher of the Year finalists are:

*Kaycie Schulte, Third Grade, South Point Elementary

*Lindsay Kober, Sixth Grade, Washington West Elementary

*Julie Trentmann, Special Education, Washington West Elementary

*Erin DeClue, Pre-K Autism, Early Learning Center

*Adam Meyer, Physical Education, South Point Elementary.
