WHS, WMS Scholar Bowl CompetitionWashington High School sent two scholar bowl teams to Sullivan, and Washington Middle School took four scholar bowl teams to Houston for competition on Saturday, November 18.

At Sullivan, there were 48 teams in all, including Lindbergh, who had won at Mizzou in October, and Mexico, who had won at Washington University two weeks ago. The teams were placed into eight groups of six teams each, and the top two from each bracket advanced to the playoffs.

In scholar bowl tournaments, there are usually preliminaries in the form of a round robin bracket, and the top teams from prelims move on to the playoffs for another round robin bracket.

WHS A went 5-0 in the prelims, making the playoffs, while the B team went 3-2 in their bracket, tying for the second best record, and also advanced to playoffs due to a tiebreaker.

The 16 playoff teams were divided into four groups of four, and the bracket winners moved into the top four to vie for the championship.

In the playoffs, WHS A went 3-0 to make the top four, and the B team went 0-3, placing in the group to play for spots 13-16.

The B team went 2-1 in their last group to place 13th of 48. Team members were Noa Nappier, Dani Benhardt, Phin Schneider, and Peter Bush.

The A team defeated Lindbergh B in the super playoffs, and then beat Lindbergh A to make the last game against Mexico in the final. After Mexico raced to a large lead, the A team closed the gap in the second half, only to fall short by 40 points, 330-290.

Team members were Nathan Oreskovic, Hayden Ley, Vincent Hoang and Alina Hayden.

Meanwhile, at Houston, the WMS A team took second overall to earn their first trophy of the season. Team members were Liam Scroggins, Brennan Sullivan, Tyson Herman and Maeve McCarrick.
