Washington Football Opens Season With Loss at Union; Home Opener Friday, September 2
Washington High School kicked off its varsity football season on Friday, August 26, with a 29-28 loss at Union.
With the Blue Jays leading 28-21, Union scored a touchdown on fourth down with 32 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Instead of kicking the extra point to tie the game, Union went for the lead on a two-point conversion and barely crossed the goal line on a run by quarterback Liam Hughes to give the Wildcats the lead for good.
It was a back-and-forth game the entire night.
Union led 14-7 after one quarter. The score was tied 14-14 at halftime and 21-21 after three quarters.
The Blue Jays took a 28-21 lead with 7:41 left in the fourth quarter on a 19-yard touchdown run by Landon Boston, who scored three of Washington’s four touchdowns.
Boston added a five-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The defensive play of the night came in the second quarter when Washington linebacker Hayden Burns intercepted a pass and raced 51 yards for a touchdown. The pick six pulled the Blue Jays even late in the second quarter, 14-14.
Offensively, Casey Olszowka and Ian Junkin split time at quarterback for the Blue Jays, who used mostly a ground attack.

Washington (0-1) will play its home opener on Friday, September 2, against Warrenton (0-1) at 7 p.m.
It will be First Responder Appreciation Night at Scanlan Stadium. All first responders are invited to meet at the scoreboard at 6:40 p.m. to be recognized prior to the game.
Washington High School also will induct the second class into its Athletic Hall of Fame during a halftime ceremony.
