Family Reading NightFamily Reading Night, a free community event, was held on Friday, March 3, at Washington Middle School.

The Community Literacy Foundation, in partnership with the School District of Washington, Washington Public Library and Friends of the Library, and the Washington Optimist Club, hosted the event.

The event featured picture book author and illustrator Colter Jackson sharing her book, “Rhino Suit,” a story of a young girl who feels things so deeply, she builds a tough-skinned rhino suit for protection. But she discovers that to feel the good, it’s important to learn ways to deal with the not-so-good.

Children who attended Family Reading Night listened to stories read by community leaders and local high school students, participated in crafts based on books, and won books.

Washington Parents as Teachers held a toddler activity room throughout the event.

The Washington Police Department held its annual skit in the gymnasium.

Readers representing the School District of Washington were: Washington High School Band, WHS Theatre Guild, WHS football team, WHS volleyball team, WHS softball team, WHS girls basketball team, SDOW music teacher Robert Redmond and South Point Elementary counselor Heather Clark.

Additional support for the event was provided by Neighborhood Reads Bookstore and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of New Haven, along with several volunteers.
