Washington's Zastrow, Lucido Compete at State Golf; Zastrow Places Eighth Overall
Washington High School golfers Owen Zastrow and Dom Lucido competed at the MSHSAA Class 4 Boys Golf Championships Monday and Tuesday, May 19 and 20, at Silo Ridge Golf & Country Club in Bolivar.
Zastrow and Lucido, both sophomores, made their first appearance at the MSHSAA Golf Championships.
On the par 72 course, Zastrow captured all-state medalist honors by placing in an eighth place tie overall with rounds of one-over par 73 and six-over par 78 for a total of seven-over par 151. He was only 11 shots behind the Class 4 winner, Peyton Smith of Summit Christian Academy.
“Owen is Steady Eddie. He didn’t have any blow-ups. He’s just so steady. He plays the game conservatively, right down the middle, and that’s what you need in golf,” said Washington Golf Coach Tim Buschmann. “He really enjoyed playing with his Tuesday group. He played with the kids who came in second and third, really good golfers. They both shot under that day. That was a really great mentoring thing for him and something he enjoyed. He never really felt any pressure through the whole tournament. He was confident. He’s played in some other big tournaments, which helped.”
Lucido finished in a tie for 36th place overall with rounds of eight-over par 80 and 11-over par 83 for a total of 19-over par 163.
Medals were awarded to the top 15 individual finishers, including ties.
“Owen and Dom both did phenomenal. I’m thrilled for both of them. Before the tournament, I told them both if they get in the top 40, that would be huge for two sophomores going to state for the first time. For Owen to place eighth and Dom to place in the top third is awesome,” Buschmann said. “They both enjoy each other, so it was good they both made it and were there. I think that helped both of them. It’s a great accomplishment for our program and the future looks great. They both play a lot of golf. Dom works at Wolf Hollow. He’s just saturated with golf. There will be big expectations for next year.”
