Blue Jays Fall Short to Warrenton in Football Home Opener

Washington High School played its varsity home football opener against Warrenton on Thursday night, September 3.

For the second week in a row to open the 2026 season, the Blue Jays’ varsity game was decided at the end of the contest with Warrenton booting a 20-yard field goal on the final play to claim a 16-14 victory over Washington.

The game was mostly a defense struggle with the Blue Jays holding the lead for much of the night.

Washington (0-2) scored on its second play from scrimmage when junior quarterback Carter Hill ran 46 yards for a touchdown. Will Helfers’ kick made the score 7-0 with 9:09 remaining in the opening quarter.

With the score 7-7, Hill scored again on a six-yard touchdown run and Helfers added the extra point to give the Blue Jays a 14-7 advantage with 5:51 remaining in the second quarter.

Washington held the 14-7 lead at halftime.

The Warriors (2-0) made the score 14-13 with 6:37 left in the fourth quarter, but the two-point conversion was stopped and the Blue Jays kept the lead.

Warrenton had one final chance at the end of the game and converted the field goal on the final play to escape with the win.

Hill had a big night behind center for the Blue Jays, carrying the ball 37 times for 240 yards and two touchdowns. He was 5-8 passing for 33 yards. Christian Gelinas had four receptions for 23 yards.

The Blue Jays will host Borgia at Scanlan Stadium Friday, September 11, at 7 p.m.
