Blue Jays Kick Off 2025 Football Season
Washington High School kicked off the 2025 varsity football season with a home contest against Union on Friday, August 29.
The Blue Jays fell short in a back-and-forth contest against the Wildcats, 14-10.
Washington, coached by Matt Klein, held a 10-0 lead at halftime, but was outscored 14-0 in the third quarter.
Scores for the Blue Jays came on a 23-yard field goal by Jack Henderson in the first quarter followed by a one-yard touchdown run by Camden Dewert in the second quarter.
Washington quarterback Carter Hill carried the ball 18 times for 79 yards and was 3-4 passing for 61 yards in the contest. Tyson Jerome also saw time as the signal caller, completing both of his pass attempts for 13 yards.
The Blue Jays’ defense allowed only 187 total yards to the run-heavy Wildcats, 170 of which came on the ground.
Camron Smith and Jack Hackmann both registered six total tackles while Dewert and Virgil Jacquin both had five, and Ben Gelinas, Lane Gerling and Henry Schenk each added four.
Festivities taking place during the season opener included the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame recognition, First Responders Appreciation and United Way kickoff drive. Performing were the WHS cheerleaders and Jaywalkers, and the Pride of Washington Marching Band.
