Blackwell Wins Title at Washington Girls Golf Tournament; Lady Jays Place Fifth
Wolf Hollow Golf Club was the site for the 11th Annual Washington High School Girls Golf Tournament on Monday, September 8.
The tournament featured 15 schools and 74 golfers competing in the 18-hole event.
Washington senior Abby Blackwell posted the tournament’s top overall score as she finished in first place in the individual standings with a one-under par round of 70. It’s the third year in a row Blackwell has won the individual title at the Washington Tournament.
Blackwell is the first golfer in the history of the WHS girls program to register an under par 18-hole round. She also posted the top score in the Lady Jays’ first two nine-hole meets of the season.
“Abby shot the low, 18-hole round of her life; a one-under 70. I couldn't be more proud of her,” said Washington Girls Golf Coach Ben Hornback. “Over our first two matches and this tournament, she has played very consistent golf. I'm looking forward to watching her and the rest of the team continue to progress over the rest of the season.”
Also for Washington, Sophia Fitzgerald, a junior, finished in 32nd place with a round of 108. Layla LaBeaume, a sophomore, placed 36th with 111. Alex Fortner, a senior, finished 47th with 117. Jennifer Kemper, a sophomore was 57th with 127.
“I'm extremely proud of the girls and their effort on the course,” Hornback said. “It was the best golf we've played as a collective unit so far this season.”
Washington finished in fifth place in the team standings with a score of 406. Liberty placed first with 346. Ft. Zumwalt North was second with 355. Ft. Zumwalt South (382), Troy (395) and Washington rounded out the top five.
