Baseball Blue Jays Split League Games Against Ft. Zumwalt East
Washington High School baseball split a two-game GAC Central series with Ft Zumwalt East, as the visiting team earned victories in both varsity contests. The trend continued at the junior varsity level, where the road team also claimed both games.
In the Gateway Athletic Conference, teams compete in two-game series on consecutive days, with each school hosting one game.
The series began on Tuesday, April 14, with the Blue Jays claiming a 9-7 victory at Ft. Zumwalt East.
Henry Vedder got the start on the mound for Washington. In 3.2 innings, he allowed four runs, three earned, on one hit with five walks and nine strikeouts. In his previous start, Vedder registered 14 strikeouts in a win over Ft. Zumwalt South.
Colton Warnecke, Nakai Scott, Caden Brocato and Lucas Howell pitched in relief. Howell was credited with the win.
Trailing 5-4, the Blue Jays scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to grab a 9-5 lead. East scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.
Ben Gelinas, Grant Hummel and Andrew Obermark led the Blue Jays’ 10-hit attack with two hits apiece. Gelinas added three RBIs while Hummel had two. Andrew Elbert, Christian Gelinas, Scott and Vedder each had one hit. Hummel, Scott and Vedder each scored two runs.
Wednesday’s matchup at the Fields at South Point also was decided by two runs, with the Lions escaping with a 4-2 victory.
Brocato got the start on the mound for the Blue Jays and cruised through the first four innings before running into trouble in the top of the fifth, where Ft. Zumwalt East scored all four of its runs. He allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
Howell and Elbert pitched in relief, keeping the Lions off the scoreboard.
Washington, coached by Dane Gough, put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but couldn’t pull even.
The Blue Jays collected four hits in the game, one apiece by Ben Gelinas, Elbert, Hummel and Vedder.
The Washington JV squad won Tuesday’s game at Ft. Zumwalt East, 3-0, and dropped Wednesday’s home contest, 2-1.
