The Washington High School scholar bowl team captured the Class 5 District 3 championship on Saturday, April 18, at Holt High School.

In the preliminary rounds, Washington posted victories over Parkway Central in round one, 570-130, Sullivan in round two, 490-110, and Holt in round three, 430-350.  

In the championship rounds, the Blue Jays defeated Sullivan in round one, 600-50, and Holt in round two, 500-250.

Team members for the Blue Jays are seniors Nathan Oreskovic and Peter Bush, junior Zach Zingrich, sophomore Brennan Sullivan and freshman Liam Scroggins.

“I am incredibly proud of the work our team has done this season,” said Washington Scholar Bowl Coach Nathan Cabot. “We have competed well in all of our tournaments against strong schools, and our success at districts reflects that effort.”

Oreskovic led the Blue Jays in scoring on Saturday, averaging 100 points per game during the preliminary rounds and earning top individual honors.

“Nathan has been an outstanding captain throughout the season, guiding not only the varsity team, but also mentoring our freshmen players alongside Peter,” Cabot said. “Peter, Zach, Brennan and Liam all contributed throughout the day in both tossups and bonus questions.

“During the championship rounds, Nathan truly elevated his performance. He answered 15 of 22 questions in our match against Sullivan and 14 of 22 in our match against Holt. After the final match against Holt, both their coaches and players commented on how impressive our team is. Their coach was especially struck by Nathan’s exceptional performance in those final two rounds.”

The Blue Jays will meet District 4 champion Kirksville in a best-of-three series in the Class 5 quarterfinals in Kirksville on Tuesday, April 28, at 5 p.m. The winner advances to the MSHSAA Class 5 Scholar Bowl Championships on Saturday, May 9 at the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Other schools still alive in Class 5 are Webster Groves, Westminster, Nevada, Springfield Central, St. Pius X and Excelsior Springs.
