Washington High School Earns Medals in Seven Events at MSHSAA Track and Field Championships

Washington High School earned all-state honors in seven events at the MSHSAA Class 4 Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 29 and 30, at Jefferson City High School.
Poor weather slowed down the state meet, as only one event was completed on Friday before the remainder of the meet was postponed until Saturday. There was another weather delay on Saturday before things were completed.
The top eight finishers in each event earned all-state honors.
The lone event that was completed on Friday was the boys 3,200-meter run, where Washington earned all-state honors with a fourth-place finish in a time of 8:04.54. Running for the Blue Jays were Mason Bliss, Reid Obermark, Gable Ohm and Steven Broadbent.
Ohm became the first male athlete in school history to earn all-state honors in three sports in the same school year. He also was all-state this school year in cross country and wrestling. Two females have accomplished it at WHS, Mia Reed and Julia Donnelly.
Broadbent was one of three Blue Jays to earn all-state honors in two events. In addition to running anchor on the 3,200-meter relay team, he also posted a third-place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:56.91. The third-place performance was Washington’s highest finish at the state meet.
Also earning all-state honors in two events were Caleb Moritz and Caleb Matchell.
Moritz registered a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.09 and was seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in 39.87.
Matchell notched a fifth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.35 meters (14-3 1/4 feet) and placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.15.
For the Lady Jays, the 3,200-meter relay team earned all-state honors with a fourth-place finish in a time of 9:44.68. Representing WHS were Grace Owenby, Kathryn Figas, Lena Wulff and Josie Keiser.
Also reaching the medal stand was Piper Tolle, who finished eighth in the pole vault by clearing 3.15 meters (10-4 feet).
Washington was represented by other athletes at the state championships.
Grace Owenby finished one spot away from a state medal in the 1,600-meter run, finishing in ninth place in a time of 5:08.76.
Macy Wieland notched a 10th-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.18.
Washington’s 1,600-meter boys relay team finished in 12th place in a time of 3:28.81. Running were Caleb Matchell, Rylen Stegen, Reid Obermark and Steven Broadbent.
Washington’s 1,600-meter girls relay team finished in 14th place in a time of 4:15.31. Running were Josie Keiser, Kathryn Figas, Carleigh Hall and River Johnson.
Washington finished tied for 12th place in the boys team standings with 23 points and tied for 30th place in the girls team standings with six points.
Class 4 state team champions were Poplar Bluff’s boys and Festus’ girls.
