WHS Student Paula Marquez Diaz Selected for U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt’s Youth Council

Washington High School incoming junior Paula Marquez Diaz has been selected to serve on U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt’s Youth Council, a program that provides Missouri high school students with firsthand experience in government, civic engagement, and public policy.
The Senator’s Youth Council offers students the opportunity to explore the legislative process through hands-on learning experiences. Throughout the program, council members will draft mock legislation and develop policy projects focused on current issues, research the foundations of representative government, and attend local government functions to gain a deeper understanding of the democratic process.
“It is a unique program and quite an honor to be selected,” said Washington High School Social Studies Teacher Allison Chaney. “I know Paula will be a great representative of Washington High School on the council and will learn a great deal. Paula was involved in Youth and Government this past year and was awarded several honors.”
Students selected for the Youth Council must be United States citizens and Missouri residents, maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average, be enrolled in high school or a comparable secondary education program, and demonstrate high moral character.
The program begins in August and includes approximately one meeting each month. Between meetings, council members complete reports on issues affecting their local communities, track legislation as it moves through the legislative process, and collaborate in small groups to develop presentations on potential public policy topics. Meetings are held throughout Missouri at regional landmarks, government buildings, and historic sites.
“While it may seem like quite the workload, I feel extremely grateful and excited to have been granted this opportunity,” Marquez Diaz said.
Marquez Diaz’s selection recognizes her commitment to civic engagement and leadership while providing her with a unique opportunity to learn about government and public service alongside students from across Missouri.
