Blue Jays Fall Short in Overtime in Town Showdown

The Town Football Showdown between the Washington Blue Jays and the Borgia Knights lived up to the hype at Scanlan Stadium on Friday, September 11.

For the third game in a row to start the season, the Blue Jays fell short in the closing seconds as Borgia escaped with a 27-21 overtime victory.

Washington (0-3) held leads of 7-0 in the second quarter, 14-7 after three quarters and 21-13 midway through the fourth quarter.

Blue Jays quarterback Carter Hill ran for touchdowns of 7 yards and 62 yards and Andrew Holdmeier added a 5-yard touchdown run. Will Schneider converted all three extra points.

Borgia (3-0) tied the game on a touchdown and a two-point conversion with 6:00 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Both teams got the ball at the opposing 25-yard line in overtime. Washington took possession first and was unable to put points on the scoreboard. Borgia then took possession and scored on a Tyler Woodle 11-yard run to win the game.

It was another big game for Hill, who carried the ball 26 times for 183 yards and scored two touchdowns. Bowyn Bast rushed for 63 yards on 13 carries. Holdmeier carried the ball eight times for 34 yards and one touchdown. Tyson Jerome rushed for 18 yards on three carries. Henry Schenk had two receptions for 27 yards.

Defensively, Christian Gelinas had an interception for Washington. Danny Peters registered six tackles while Justin Brooman added five and Caleb Moritz and Drew Straatmann both had four.

Performing at the game were the Pride of Washington along with the WHS Jaywalkers and cheerleaders.

Washington hosts FT. Zumwalt South (0-3) for Homecoming Friday, September 18, at 7 p.m.
