Softball Lady Jays Off to Fast Start to Season

Washington High School varsity softball is off to a hot start to the 2026 season.

The Lady Jays entered action on Tuesday, September 15, with a 12-3 overall record and a 4-0 mark in the GAC Central.

Playing at the Seckman Tournament on Saturday, September 12, Washington knocked off St. Dominic 9-2 and lost to Eureka in eight innings, 7-4.

Washington, coached by Grant Young and Tim Zumsteg, has been swinging hot bats through the first 15 games of the season. The Lady Jays have 13 home runs by five different players. They have a team batting average of .367, a slugging percentage of .586 and 141 hits on the season.

Leading the offense has been Harper Brown with a batting average of .500 to go with four homers and 23 RBIs, Madisen Meyer with a .465 average with one home run and 17 RBIs, and Makenzie Harrison with a .460 average with nine doubles, nine RBIs and 12 stolen bases.

McKarra Graham is hitting .370, Riley Coleman is at .366 with three homers and 12 RBIs, Macy Wieland is at .359 with four home runs and 21 RBIs, Emily Schwoeppe is hitting .333 with a home run and six RBIs, Ella Ruether is hitting .282 with 10 RBIs and Colsie Lange is hitting .279 with eight RBIs.

In the circle, Graham has an 8-0 record with a 0.31 earned-run average. Harrison is 2-1 with a 1.63 ERA. Schwoeppe and Brown also have pitched.

Some of Washington’s early-season highlights so far have been victories over previously unbeaten Troy along with Howell Central, Capital City, Blair Oaks, Windsor, Neosho, Timberland, Ft. Zumwalt South, Ft. Zumwalt East, North Point, St. Dominic and Union.
