Varsity Blue Jays Compete at Union Basketball Tournament

WHS Boys BasketballThe Washington High School varsity boys basketball team competed at the Union Tournament January 24-29 at Union High School.

The fifth-seeded Blue Jays, coached by Grant Young, saw two of their three games in the tournament decided in overtime.

Washington opened the tournament on Monday, January 24, with a 70-65 overtime victory over fourth-seeded Rockwood Summit.

Mark Hensley had a big game for the Blue Jays, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Paule added 19 points. Kaner Young scored 16 points. Tai’Sean Williams chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.

The Blue Jays then dropped a 54-26 decision to top-seeded and eventual tournament champion Ft. Zumwalt South on Friday, January 28, in the championship semifinals. Chase Merryman led WHS with nine points.

The Blue Jays concluded the event on Saturday, January 29, with a 69-67 overtime loss to third-seeded Union in the third-place contest. Todd Bobo scored 15 points for Washington.

Paule and Hensley represented Washington on the all-tournament team.
