The Washington Middle School Outdoor Club took 70 students and six teachers to Caldwell Wildlife Area on a fishing excursion as their first club event for September.
The purpose was to help students understand in a hands-on way that fishing is not only fun, but it’s also an indicator of water quality: fish diversity tells us the water is healthy or in need of further maintenance and protection.
The 70 students were divided into groups that also competed for awards in categories. Students were awarded with prizes and certificates for winning each group’s “Biggest Fish” and “Most Fish” awards.
Teachers on hand were Stefanie Virgen (Outdoor Club Sponsor), Mike Trentmann (Science), Andi Roemer-Kruger (SPED), Karen Bruning (ELA), McKie Martin (Science) and Matt Soete (Student Teacher).
